Sidey 20/05/2010
Sidey are a Perthshire based manufacture, supplier and fitter of windows, doors and conservatories, kitchens and bathrooms. With a long and proud history, Sidey are fully committed to preserving the natural environment and providing customers with energy efficient products and environmental services.
Due to the varied nature of its services, the waste streams of Sidey could vary from plastic and glass through to wood, cardboard, paper and rubble.
The issues
On their factory premises at Perth, Sidey were using one 40 yard skip, collected every 2-3 days, to dispose of all of their waste streams. This arrangement presented two major problems.
Firstly, little was being recycled and as such this practice was not aligning with the company’s policy on environmental responsibility.
Secondly, with the majority of waste ending up in landfill the cost of disposal was a mounting to around £2000 per week in landfill tax and collection fees. A full review of the sites’ waste management was therefore urgently needed.
SWR Solution
A thorough waste audit conducted by SWR quickly determined the different waste types being produced and how and where it was being created.
The process put in place by SWR involved the separation of each waste stream as close to the point of its production at the factory a possible. Instead of one skip, each waste type was going into individual, clearly marked containers for removal from site.
SWR worked closely with Sidey to ensure staff on site bought in as stakeholders in the new process and provided training where necessary to ensure the new system was adopted quickly, correctly and efficiently.
SWR would employ the services of carefully selected local contractors to carry out the work for Sidey. The SWR system of managing customer service, invoicing, monitoring and revenue generation centrally under a single contract, would eliminate any time or hassle associated with managing multiple suppliers.
The Outcome
- The recycling reporting offered by SWR allowed Sidey to meet the requirements of the local councils it works with, by demonstrating significant recycling rates, typically in excess of 80%
- The waste disposal model designed and implemented by SWR was easily extended into other areas of Sidey’s business such as council-owned project sites, further improving recycling performance and reducing costs
Testimonial
“SWR analysed our waste streams and designed a waste strategy for our business to promote recycling. SWR rapidly implemented its proposals, installing containers on site and training all our staff. We are delighted with the results, in particular the hugely increased recycling rates.” Charles Arbuthnott, Managing Director, Sidey
“The new waste management system has been a complete success and we can now boast impressive recycling rates at our factory and from our various local authority contract sites. SWR has helped us to achieve a massive improvement in our environmental performance, along with substantial cost savings totalling several thousand pound a year.” George McKenna, Director of Manufacturing.
